MikkoPaasi and Ivan Karadzic are long-time drive school partners but they are from different continents. One day, they received a call for help from the Thai government. Their expertise and specialized equipment were needed to locate and extricate 12 members of a soccer team and their coach from a flooded cave in Koh Tao.
Paasitravelled from Malta to the northern Thai city to meet up with his friend Karadzic. The two divers became a part of the crucial mission to guide the boys through the narrow, mud-clogged passages of the ThamLuangcave while the world waited for the outcome. US military officials described the team of divers as the world’s best whose mission was to pull off an impossible undertaking that might end in multiple deaths.
Since the 1980’s, Koh Tao has become popular among divers because of the clear aquamarine waters, the sunny weather and the endless opportunities to dive. According to Jim Donaldson, owner and manager of Big Blue Diving, a diving school in Koh Tao, there were at least 6 dive shops in the 8-square mile island when he arrived. Now, there are about 65 dive shops.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, they welcomed 35 million visitors last year. Karadzic who is from Denmark, visited Koh Tao in 2006 on a recreational diving holiday. The trip changed his life. He quit his job in Denmark, sold his apartment and moved to Koh Tao to become a diving instructor.
