A leader’s job goes beyond just giving orders to employees. Today, leaders should work with their teams hands-on, understand their employees’ strengths and find creative strategies to motivate employees.
Knowing employees and their talents
Jen Kelchner from Broadwell Group Inc. states that even the greatest collaborators need to showcase their strengths to fortify a team. It is important that the current responsibilities and previous work history of employees are known. It is beneficial to have them feel valued and to use their talents in ways that are engaging and inspiring for them. The whole team will then be motivated to follow.
Setting employees for success
Lianne Lyne from PLP Coaching, LLC indicates that assignments need to be presented in ways that will more likely produce success. A recognized success strengthens an employee’s feeling of competence which improves motivation. It is best to define a task, to plan the wanted outcome and to set up the milestones. People do not necessarily have to be successful always. However, it is helpful when opportunities are presented that get them to improve those chances.
Charmaine Pocek from MyImprovedResume expresses how compliments are rarely given. A compliment can go a long way. An email or a card that states that an employee is doing great has an amazing impact. Furthermore, when an Amazon or Starbucks gift card is up for grabs, the team will be motivated to work.
Barbara Safani from Career Solvers says that being honest about how a team’s effort help a business objective is important. Also, acknowledging each member’s contribution to the team is important too. It is also beneficial to share some information about new business, account status and blind spots in order to build accountability.
Taking it outside
Michelle Riklan from Riklan Resources LLC mentions that team building exercises and activities are a great way to inspire team collaboration. There are even some programs that have charitable components included. When a team works together for a cause and feels that they influenced other people’s lives, they will be motivated to put the same effort for a common goal at work.
